Coir is the fiber extracted from the outer husks of coconuts and
thus you will still hear it referred to as 'coco mats' or
'coconut matting' More recently with great popularity of natural
flooring it has come in to its own as 'Coir carpeting' Coir
weaving is a centuries old craft with the vast majority of the
world's production based in the Alleppey region in Kerala in the
south western part of India. What makes Coir
different?
Coir products are 100% natural. Coir carpeting is an
'In-fashion' furnishing accessory, hardwearing, attractive, warm
underfoot, sound insulating, mothproof and rot & fungi
resistant, flame retardant, anti-static, and with regular
treatment far more easily kept clean than its detractors would
suggest. Coir fiber is naturally hygroscopic, breathing in and
giving out atmosphere moisture, thus helping to maintain an
equable humidity in the home. This is also the reason why it is
always advisable to fully adhere the material to the sub-floor
to avoid stretching or shrinkage. The material may either be
stuck down direct or in conjunction with one of the property
underlay systems, It is recommended a skilled carpet layer is
always employed.
Where all can you use Coir?
Coir mats possess great absorbency, excellent scraping
properties and come in an almost bewildering array of stock
sizes, colors, designs, qualities. Coir products can be used in
almost all domestic situations. As mats, indoors or outdoors,
the later preferably in areas not directly open to the weather,
suitable for all price ranges from the budget to luxury. As a
close cover or area rugs in living, dining rooms, conservatories
and even bedrooms where 'natural look' is sought. Coir carpeting
complements all furniture styles from antique to ultra modern.
Coir matting can be used as artificial cricket pitches. You are
literally only bound by your imagination as to the uses of coir.
